Building Resilient and Sustainable District Health Systems

UNICEF Malawi is implementing the FCDO-funded United Nations Joint Programme (UNJP) on Health Systems Strengthening (2024–2028), targeting six districts: Rumphi, Mzimba South, Ntchisi, Kasungu, Nsanje, and Chikwawa. This program seeks to improve health outcomes by contributing to Universal Health Coverage (UHC), achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and ensuring better health for women, men, children, and adolescents in Malawi by 2028.

The UNJP prioritizes strengthening capacities at national and district levels to ensure equitable access to gender-responsive, adolescent-friendly, and integrated primary healthcare (PHC) services. It aligns with the Health Sector Strategic Plan III (HSSP III) to operationalize health sector reforms and deliver a quality essential healthcare benefits package.

This program complements existing government financing and development initiatives, working in collaboration with key stakeholders such as the World Bank, USAID, the Government of Norway, and the German Government. It builds on past successes to address health system inequities, scale up financing mechanisms like Health Care Improvement Grants, and enhance emergency preparedness and response for resilience across the six targeted districts.

PACHI works closely with the Ministry of Health (MoH) – key directorates like the Directorate of Planning and Policy, Reproductive Health Directorate, Quality Management Directorate, Digital Health etc). At sub-national level PACHI works with District Health management Teams from the 6 target district.
